Elwood was the location for more athletes racing at the weekend as a few took on the Active Tri on Sunday. More great conditions led to some cracking racing and personal bests falling all over the place. This is also a testament to those athletes who are now showing the rewards for the long months of consistent training including putting in during Hell Week. Make sure you take recovery week this week seriously to then build back up for your next race. Next racing we have Challenge Melbourne and Challenge Sprint on Sunday 31st January. Entries are still available for these – the sprint being perfectly placed between Gatorade races. The following weekend on the 7th February Geelong 70.3 takes place.
NEW EXCITING FORMAT FOR SHORT COURSE TRAINING THIS WEEKEND
This Saturday we are changing up our short course combo giving all levels of athlete a challenge and to get more race specific training in as we head into the second half of the Triathlon season. This applies to all short course athletes from advanced to newbies and will form a key specific part of your training week.
The session will begin at 6:30am with a ride including specific individual time-trial efforts. Coach Greg will ride with those who have not ridden or are new to road riding working on some specific skills and group riding etiquette, so no excuses not to turn up. This will be followed by an ability/race distance run and swim with transition practice. The earlier time is to avoid the large cycle groups on beach road and get your session complete for any Saturday commitments you may have. For Sunday the short course long ride will be replaced with a long run and open water soak/swim at Elwood from 7am. If you have any questions regards this please contact at [email protected] or speak with your coach.
Always ensure you check the timetable and our Victorian Facebook page for training updates as these sometimes have to change at short notice. Click the session on the calendar to give you more details including time and location. Open Water session on Monday 25th at 6:15pm Elwood – no MSAC pool swim that night (St Michael’s is on as normal). Wednesday MSAC evening swims are at the earlier time of 6:15pm. St Michael’s technique swims are at the normal times of 7pm Monday and Wednesday evenings. We do try to keep the swim times consistent but MSAC are not always able to accommodate us when we would like.
Next Tuesday 26th January is Australia Day so there will no normal timetabled sessions. There will however be a ride for everyone from Elwood at 7am followed by an open water swim. Weather permitting Tri-Alliance will also put on a breakfast BBQ for athletes to help celebrate the and get your day off to a great start.
Garage Sale this Thursday at Combo – we are having a clear out of gear (swimming/cycle/run) so bring some cash and grab some bargains.

A number of athletes have commented about not receiving FB updates from Tri-Alliance Victoria on their feed and thus missing out on important squad and training session information. After some digging and a social media lesson or two (Thanks Ian) below see how to set your notifications on so the most important news doesn’t get lost in all the trash on our feeds!
Go to Tri Alliance Facebook Page & activate notifications. Once this is ticked, it will then appear in your Notifications anytime an update is made.

Please ensure you check the calendar regularly to ensure you know where and when sessions are as they do sometimes change (this is especially true for swim sessions at MSAC as these can change and are often unfortunately beyond our control). This weeks highlighted sessions: (please ensure you check your program or consult a coach so you attend the appropriate session and that you know your distances – remember you are accountable too!).
When out riding please do so safely and pay attention to all the road rules and others using the road. Read on for a guide to cycling etiquette and bike road safety and ethics.
- Thursday 21th Jan – Combo & Run – Elwood @6pm (reminder to always bring your wettie to these sessions to get in and practice OW).
- Saturday 23rd Jan – Long course ride – Elwood rolling @630am.
- Saturday 23rd Jan – Short Course Combo Elwood @6:30am. Bring all your gear but be prepared to ride first leaving the rest of your gear in your car (or a fellow athlete’s car).
- Sunday 24th Jan – All athletes (long & short course) Run and Swim – Elwood @7am.
When riding on a Tri-Alliance coached road ride it is a requirement to wear team colours. This helps keep and identify the group together and provides more safety in the fact that other riders from outside the group are less likely to join in the group – we do not know them or their riding abilities.
Safe & Happy Training
