1. WORD FROM THE COACHES

Thanks to all those athletes who rode and enjoyed the Australia Day bbq breakfast yesterday. It was a great way to start the day. A number of other athletes took part in the Great Australia Day swim down at Brighton too – well done and by the pictures you had a great time .

This Sunday sees the culmination of many athletes hard work through the past few months with the Challenge Melbourne half distance race. From the event complex at Green Point, Brighton there will be a 1.9k swim in the bay followed by 3 laps (totaling 90k) down to Mordialloc and before 3 laps of a 7k run course along the coastal path. The dedication that has been shown by many of our athletes will be rewarded at the weekend and we wish all to have a great race. If you are not racing please come down and support those who are. Having a friendly face and encouragement helps when it is getting tough. For some short course athletes they will also be racing on the course in the Giant Sprint race – entries are still available if you are itching to race before Elwood in 3 weeks time. Ensure you check out the course plans before the weekend – the run course has changed a little since we ran it over the past couple of weeks. All info on courses and times can be found here for both races.

Please also ensure you have all your registration details and profile correctly entered for the race on the event site – accessible through the email you received at registration. Detailed race and wave information should be coming through very soon from the event organisers SME360.

For those racing and wanting to use the race day tent we would appreciate some help setting up on Saturday from 10am – the long course ride will begin and finish at Green Point to aid this process. Many hands make light work and this gives you the best place pre-race to get ready before and celebrate after.

Also racing this weekend we wish well Belinda who is travelling to Canberra to compete in the age group qualifying race over the Olympic distance. Go get ’em.

BEGINNER ROAD RIDING SKILLS

Next Tuesday on the 2nd February at 6:15pm coach Annemarie will be running a refresher on road riding skills and etiquette so if you are new to the roads or want to brush up please come along to the session starting at 6:15pm from the front of MSAC. Bring all cycling gear and appropriate clothing. Please email [email protected] if you have any specific questions regards this ride.

NEW EXCITING FORMAT FOR SHORT COURSE TRAINING CONTINUES THIS WEEKEND

Following great feedback from the first revised short course session we will be running these for the next few weeks getting sharper for upcoming races. We are giving all levels of athlete a challenge and to get more race specific training in as we head into the second half of the Triathlon season. This applies to all short course athletes from advanced to newbies and will form a key specific part of your training week.

calendar

The session will begin at 6:30am with a ride including specific individual time-trial efforts. A coach will ride with those who have not ridden or are new to road riding working on some specific skills and group riding etiquette, so no excuses not to turn up. This will be followed by an ability/race distance run and swim with transition practice. The earlier time is to avoid the large cycle groups on beach road and get your session complete for any Saturday commitments you may have. For Sunday the short course long ride will be replaced with a long run and open water soak/swim at Green Point (Challenge Race) from 7am – meet at the tent group together and run whilst cheering along your fellow athletes. If you have any questions regards this please contact at [email protected] or speak with your coach.

February’s timetable is now online with all session times and locations. Always ensure you check this timetable and our Victorian Facebook page for training updates as these sometimes have to change at short notice. Click the session on the calendar to give you more details including time and location. We do try to keep the swim times consistent but MSAC are not always able to accommodate us when we would like.

New running gear dropping at the end of this week along with a re-stock of male cycle jerseys……. – check them out here.

A number of athletes have commented about not receiving FB updates from Tri-Alliance Victoria on their feed and thus missing out on important squad and training session information. After some digging and a social media lesson or two (Thanks Ian) below see how to set your notifications on so the most important news doesn’t get lost in all the trash on our feeds!

Go to Tri Alliance Facebook Page & activate notifications. Once this is ticked, it will then appear in your Notifications anytime an update is made.

6.TRAINING SESSION UPDATES

calendar

Please ensure you check the calendar regularly to ensure you know where and when sessions are as they do sometimes change (this is especially true for swim sessions at MSAC as these can change and are often unfortunately beyond our control). This weeks highlighted sessions: (please ensure you check your program or consult a coach so you attend the appropriate session and that you know your distances – remember you are accountable too!).

When out riding please do so safely and pay attention to all the road rules and others using the road.  Read on for a guide to cycling etiquette and bike road safety and ethics.

  • Thursday 28th Jan – Combo & Run – Elwood @6pm (reminder to always bring your wettie to these sessions to get in and practice OW).
  • Saturday 30th Jan – Long course ride – Green Point, Brighton @630am. For those racing Sunday check your programs as this should be short and easy with a very short jog and maybe an easy swim/soak. Help put the tent up afterwards.
  • Saturday 30th Jan – Short Course Combo Elwood @6:30am. Bring all your gear but be prepared to ride first leaving the rest of your gear in your car (or a fellow athlete’s car).
  • Sunday 31st Jan – Challenge Melbourne and Challenge Sprint – Green Point, Brighton
  • Sunday 31st Jan – All non-racing athletes (long & short course) Run and Swim – Green Point, Brighton @7am. Meet and group at the tent to organise yourselves to run and cheer those racing Challenge Melbourne. Swim or soak post run.

When riding on a Tri-Alliance coached road ride it is a requirement to wear team colours. This helps keep and identify the group together and provides more safety in the fact that other riders from outside the group are less likely to join in the group – we do not know them or their riding abilities.
